What Apple can get from Nokia and Google
Earlier this week, the increase in the release of the software to the public, Apple began to run stress tests push notification - a distinguishing feature of the new operating system. The system sends a notification over the phone when there is a renewal application, even if it is not running.
To manage the onslaught of notifications for each application, Apple added a new menu, which allows users to control the push notification preferences for each application, and quickly switch to turn them on or off. While convenient, this introduces annoying problem for business users Nokia decided that ten years ago, providing a quick way to change the terms without the hassle of menu hopping.
You sound profile that Nokia has in their phones for more than ten years, doing just that. They allow you to change a few settings on the device just two button presses, and include things like call volume, vibration, keyboard melodies as well as control over how much attention to each type of warning the user.
The best part is, you can switch between profiles quickly pressing the power button and selecting from the popup menu. You can make your own custom profiles with the settings of your choice. They have the option to be automatically switched on and off at certain times of the day, so you can go to his silence during the 10 hours that he does not wake you or your friend’s significant when you are trying to go to sleep.
Regarding the iPhone, you have a profile, and only one profile. Even if you turn on the sound of the call volume muffler available flipping the switch, you will still receive alerts and vibration for incoming calls, e-mail, text messages, etc. Moreover, in the iPhone OS 3.0, Apple has built some of the options turn these things and leave a little deeper than they were in version 2.0.
The new notification settings, which now live e-mail notification to push for human habitation. That I was pushed ever deeper in your mail, which means that settings, such as how often he gets e-mails or pop-up in the calendar, and invitations you should plunge deep three settings menu (not including two or more steps required for communication and unlock the phone, and enter the settings menu).
So, I have a problem with all this when I started, I want to turn all these things back in after that it was switched off and I could not hear the buzz or light up the screen every few minutes while I was asleep. I want my work and Yahoo e-mail, push through and get all the other mail every 15 minutes. I want to push the cover back on the notices, too. Now I must go through two different settings menu, flipping each of those things where there really should be one where I can manage.
Even better would be a system similar to Nokia, where can I set up the phone to all of these activities at certain times of day, as I am able to set timed alarms. Or how to use those $ 30 and $ 50 plastic charging dock with the phone automatically switches to a number of parameters, when in a particular dock. Heck, what would I want to buy one for work and home.
What really amazes me about this is that Apple’s general director Steve Dzhobs became a notorious stickler for detail in the software and hardware found inside the company. Anecdote about jobs in Steven Levy’s Perfect thing: How IPod Shuffles Commerce, Culture and coolness, mentioned that he had badgered the engineering teams from initial IPod times when he could not get on a song he wanted for a certain number of clicks, something that has led IPod in to the original text of the simplistic structure of the menu.
Jobs wanted to get a song in just three clicks. I just want to bring my e-mail and notification on and off in less than nine.
Third party innovation
In SBsettings menu jailbroken iPhones enables users to quickly change settings for different applications and services.
(List of participants: BigBoss.org) Just because Apple has not yet addressed this issue with its own software release does not mean that it did not work for others.
A third-party iPhone developer known as BigBoss to solve these problems, half of eight months ago with the application for jailbroken iPhones called SBsettings. This is a menu that drops down when you slide your finger across the top of the iPhone, and also provides quick on / off access to various features such as 3G, Bluetooth, and the phone signal. The closest to Apple iPhone with software that is received from the airplane mode, but that is all or nothing decision, and still requires the output of any application you’re in.
What a pleasure SBsettings that follows you no matter what application you’re using, which is just such a system to control the level of Apple to bake in the future firmware.
The company has already done this with some hardware buttons, as well as special software, as controlled by a combination of pressing the button twice to call home, for example, IPod control, phone favorites, and soon the phone-wide search. But where it really enough when you need to make quick changes to the application, but do not want to leave it to do so. This happens to me all the time when I need to hop over to another Wi-Fi network, or AM-read it in bed, and would like to move the brightness down. It is simply a pain to break whatever I am doing and dig Apple is growing the settings menu.
For comparison, Google in a more open approach to its Android mobile platform has led to a handful of truly useful applications that delivers exactly the type of functionality I pined earlier. One is called the Toggle is very similar to SBsettings and puts most of the phone antenna control directly in the status bar, so you can quickly swipe your finger down and set up Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, screen brightness, volume, and flight mode. As SBsettings It can be set for the entire system, which means at its disposal when you need it, regardless of its app you use.
Others, called Language, you can change some settings, when you get within a certain geographical area. I use it very quickly to adjust the radius of my work here at CNET in San Francisco and in my house over in Auckland. When I get into one of these two zones, it can change things like the brightness of the screen, ringtones, wallpapers, and the phone antenna is switched on and off.
This innovation has already been there, and he can do iPhone OS, which is much easier to use. Although Apple often remained unchanged in the maintenance of the thing is too simplistic to appeal to the masses (see the Mighty Mouse, buttonless Shuffle, one input cinema LCD displays, etc.) to do this deal on iPhone getting business more difficult.
Any business users who intend to use the iPhone for work and leisure have a lot of things to look forward to the upcoming iPhone OS 3.0 update, but juggling notification e-mail retrieval and other options can add up to a headache.
Apple did not respond to calls or e-mail address for receiving comments on the changes in the menu.
Update: The developer Mario Intelliborn pinged me to let me know about it MyProfiles app for jailbroken iPhones. It lets you do most things I say and more, including a way to call and notice of certain parties to pass. To use it you need a phone that has been jailbroken to allow unsigned, third-party applications.
