Verizon wants its software to mobile phones
“I do not think I need to rely on the operating system,” said Lowell McAdam, director of Verizon Wireless, in the form of questions and answers at CTIA 2009 environment. “I need to focus on sectors that will bridge these operating systems.”
McAdam is the news Wednesday announced that Verizon Wireless will join the Joint Innovation Lab (Jill), established its corporate parent, Vodafone, as well as China Mobile and Softbank. Jill plans to build a “mobile widgets” for future phones will likely work on any operating system, Verizon decision support in its future smartphones.
Seven organizations are currently fighting for the inner track to start the mobile computer in the future. Symbian, Research In Motion, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Palm and Limo Foundation are all fighting to get the software as a platform for the future, and not all of them are going to do it: the choice is good, but too many options to suppress developers and carriers, not to mention users.
Earlier in his speech, Verizon connection, the general director Ivan Seidenberg predicted that this list will get whittled down as the industry coalesces around an open operating environment. ” He certainly did not say which of them is Verizon eyeing, or any Seidenberg McAdam took bait that the Q and A session after the primary.
McAdam to say that “three, four, probably will survive. Verizon plan with Jill seems to be a continuation of its historical strategy of putting its own software – something like VCast – on his phone, which gives him the opportunity to tightly control what applications run on its network and expand its brand in the software and entertainment. For example, Verizon, and the part of Jill, will create future games for phones on its network, McAdam said.
It will be interesting to see how the Verizon software works with applications created by other developers, such as those that appear on the BlackBerry Storm now, BlackBerry App world running. Widgets, by definition, are relatively easy, but how Verizon selects the priorities of the applications on its devices can determine how widely they are used to applications created by third parties.
This also probably means that the ban on the significant changes in strategy for Apple, and Verizon, are unlikely to add any time soon. Currently, there is an obvious obstacle in the various networking standards used in the iPhone and phones in the Verizon, but the company is philosophically opposed to when it comes to software: it is hard to imagine Apple agreeing to allow Verizon to launch its own widgets on the iPhone.
It also means, Verizon is still seeking to avoid the fate of a “dumb pipe”, leaving the software to others, and just making sure its network is working properly. As usual, it all comes down to money: people are spending a fortune over the next ten years in the mobile software and services, and Verizon wants to make sure that it is part of the action.
