Prizefight: Palm Pre-against MyTouch 3G

I know that you will find it incredible that Prizefight from CNET has a touch screen mobile phones that do not have the iPhone. Be assured, however, we did just that. After analyzing the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G last month, I began to wonder how it will stack against the competition. In the iPhone is a natural choice, but the device is Apple and T-Mobile G1 have already done battle and that is why I do not want too much repetition. This led me to the Palm as a pre-ideal candidate. Bonnie Cha, Brian Tong and joined me as a judge, and we put the two phones in the ring.

In pre survived a narrow loss for the iPhone 3GS last month, but I knew that it would put up a good fight with the other Google Android mobile phone. Both offer a lot - is the pre-multitasking and MyTouch its setting - but the numbers remain relatively good match in terms of features. Which is better? You can read to learn.

TouchPal gives Android extension soft keyboard

Despite the fact that T-Mobile G1 is only the physical keyboard at the start, the release of Android 1.5 “Cupcake” update brought a virtual keyboard on the first Google Android mobile phone. Moreover, Google includes its own soft keyboard, but also produced a writing engine API so that developers can create a keyboard. Here’s one of my favorites.

TouchPal is a new virtual keyboard for Android, the proposed CooTek. It stands apart from standard versions, offering a host of new accessories and fast, and three keyboard layouts (QWERTY, Compact QWERTY, and T9). ToucPalm also supports four languages with plans for 20 more. Mixed language input allows you to easily switch languages while entering.

Yoke gestures play an important role when using the keyboard. For example, when you click on the letter, and a strong blow, it will enter the letter. Yoke down any key, and it will introduce an alternative one. This makes it very easy to input numbers and symbols, rather than switch to a layout. Users can swipe left and right of the keyboard to rotate the different layouts.

In the engines used in TouchPal is the best thing I’ve ever used. He does an excellent job predicting the words I am typing, and even predicts the next word based on context. I found that in the context of mistyping correction performs better Android default. There, in a special key for switching on and off user dictionary so that you can enter the exact letters without forecasting engine intervention.

Android users will also be pleased to hear that the text is in the perfect location T9 keypad. If you have ever complained that the soft keys are too small, and then try to T9. He suggested that all letters to the nine large buttons that are easy to use with your fingers. Other alternate keyboards for Android promised this feature, but they can not seem to make it work.

CooTek offers TouchPal Keyboard free at Android Market until September 30. It is not announced prices, but with Windows Mobile version retails for $ 9.75. This will be a high price for Android users, but probably not for MyTouch 3G, which has no physical keyboard completely. Application only in its first issue, therefore, we must wait and see what improvements come on the basis of user feedback. At the same time, TouchPal remain my choice of virtual keyboards.

Some users have complained of problems with TouchPal because they do not put it carefully. I included the full steps, if you need further assistance.

Download TouchPal keyboard (main) from Android Market
Download one of TouchPal language packs
Scroll to Phone settings> Language and Text> Insert TouchPal
Long click on any text box and select the Input Method
Select TouchPal, as your choice and you are ready to begin
CooTek downloaded a video demonstration, which gives a brief overview of TouchPal.

Official multitouch appear in Android 2.0?

Google Android fans have long been waiting for the official support for multitouch devices on Android, but Google has not offered any evidence. Even in this year’s Google I / O developer multitouch-conferences, where there was a hot topic, I just heard that “we do not know when it comes.” But after some digging to do and talk to several sources familiar with the situation, it looks like the Android users can, finally, of its wish to receive this holiday season.

Where next?
Let me begin with the rumor of the day. As I understand it, Android 2.0 will ship this year and will include support for multitouch similar to that found on the iPhone and Palm Pre.This may seem far-fetched for some readers, but there is increasing evidence in the backup.

Several blogs have reported that the Android will be two more updates this year. I think the first would be slight modifications based on the error branch Android. The second update, however, is likely to be a major upgrade based at eclair industry.

The release schedule has recently supported on Reuters interview with Andy Rubin, director of mobile platforms for Google. Reuters reported that Android 1.6 will meet the eclair and the vessel will be as Android 2.0.

So if Android 2.0 coming this year, when he will be released? Well, if rumors are true, Google has chosen Motorola to eclair demonstration at one of its upcoming Android phones. A Moto phone is quite likely, given recent comments from the Director General Motorola Sanjay Jha, who said that his company was “100 percent” related to Google. It is characterized by Moto and Google relationship as “very solid” and said that the two are coordinating their development efforts.

Jha comments included in accordance with what I saw on the upcoming device called Motorola Sholes. Some sources have told me that Sholes, which could launch at Verizon Wireless before the end of the year will be the flagship device for the release of Google eclair.

What does it offer?
Since the Google, apparently, decided to use the Android 2.0-branding this year we can expect some major updates to the mobile operating systems. As already mentioned, multitouch support is one of the most requested features. Android engineers are squashed hopes to see multitouch failed to update, but there is evidence that the company is working on it.

Google constantly drops the new code in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), which gives us an advance, that in the next Android. Many independent software developers use open source release of a custom version of Android, you can flash to the hacked phone. Cyanogen, one of the most active developers, said there was nothing in the error code Android multitouch, but there is a new kernel is obliged to support it.

Some manufacturers of devices like HTC have included their own multitouch features in phones, as a hero, but to add a feature using the software update will be different, because Google was directly involved.

Google, Motorola and Verizon has been extremely quiet with the exact details of the impending launch. The set for Motorola opens its first Android phones on the summit Motodev, we finally know his secret. And if all will be true, Verizon would be hot and smart phone Google would have a decent device for spot Android 2.0 to the new iPhone OS 3.0. Prepare to be surprised.
