iPhone users are not the only ones who receive Cool Apps

The long-awaited Google Android device flow is going to hit the market, which should help to bring more cool applications on the new Android phones.

Motorola will be the next big producer to announce its Android Phone. The company plans to officially unveil it at the event Thursday in San Francisco. Motorola has already appeal to developers, to get them on board to create new applications that it hopes will increase the demand for new phones.

Mobile applications for smart phones is hot. The fact that Apple’s App Store has had more than 1 billion only after loading to be around for a year, meaning that smartphone users are hungry for applications that make their phones more useful and interesting. But the developers, whether large or small, have limited resources and time, and they must choose a platform to develop applications for the former.

While it is clear that the iPhone is the first platform developers target. As a result, Apple is currently the largest mobile App Store on the market with more than 75000 applications. What this means for consumers is that the more likely that the newest and hottest applications available on the iPhone to other devices.

And the reason the developers decided to develop for the iPhone easy. It has the largest base of users of interactive. It also has a simple and effective distribution channel through ITunes Store. And it is easy to develop for the view that there is a one-size screen and one version of the operating system.

“Developing applications for the iPhone is no threat,” said Noam Bardin, CEO of Mobile App called Waze, who developed a navigation application for iPhone, Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile Platforms. “You get a much greater return for each line of code to write for the iPhone . But then the question arises as to what platform you develop on? ”

Now, it seems that most developers to create applications for research in devices BlackBerry Motion’s. And then they move to developing for Google Android.

“What happens is the Android platform is the third for people to think,” said Alex Quilici, CEO of YouMail, a free, Visual voice service, which is available for the iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, and devices. “The way we did it like YouMail has received more and more audiences, we began to see 4 percent or 5 percent of our audience for Android. And we have built Android App meet these people because it is relatively easy to do.”

Earlier this week, Yahoo announced the use of Flickr for the iPhone and the two other applications for Yahoo IPHONES and several devices BlackBerry. The company said it plans to release versions of these applications for other phones, such as Android phones later.

“We will make the application available on Android device, and Palm Previously later”, Sandeep Gupta, senior director of mobile applications, Yahoo said. “We’re not waiting for these devices have a critical mass, but we have priorities. And that means developing applications for devices with the most interactive mobile users in the first place.”

Android powerful potential
IPhone and BlackBerry are two of the leading smartphones in the U.S. market, so it makes sense for developers, as Yahoo, to develop for these devices in the first place. But as more Android phones coming to market in the coming months, the priorities among the developers may change. Apple, which has at least two years head start on the rest of the market will undoubtedly be a top priority for the developers for a long time in the future. But Android, most likely, Garner some attention as well.

“You will see a slow but steady growth in development for Android,” Quilici said. “And it will depend on people to migrate existing applications or extending applications, interfaces to services.”

This week, the two most popular mobile applications, social network Facebook-site and online radio service Pandora, each released applications on Android Market. These applications have been available for several months in the App Store and the BlackBerry world.

In many ways, Android has the potential for even greater platform for developers than the iPhone. Many developers have already been impressed with Google’s open approach to the market. Moreover, that source code is freely available for developers, which allows you to easily develop on the platform, but developers can also deploy their applications directly to the Android Market. This means that developers can get updates and new versions of their applications immediately, without waiting to be approved by Apple.

The only thing that could hurt Apple in the long run is the fact that the company claims that each application gets the App Store. Developers often complain that the process can be lengthy and often denied the application without any specific explanation.

“The biggest challenge for developers when it comes to Apple is their use of certified,” said Bardin. “The whole process is a black box. You do not know how long it takes, or if your application is approved. ”

Meanwhile, BlackBerry, perhaps the biggest audience in terms of smartphones in the U.S. market, but developers say it is the most difficult environment to develop applications for because there are so many different versions of devices with different screen size and screen resolution, and even small differences the operating system.

New BlackBerry AppWorld store also not really taken off, however, partly because it is not as easy as App Store for iPhone. Payments are made through PayPal and the audience are likely to pay for the performance of applications, not games and other applications, in accordance with Quilici. Another problem is AppWorld store is not available on every BlackBerry, which means open easier for some users than for others.

Then there is Android. Platform is the easiest to develop for. However, the market has so far been small, because there were only two devices are available in the U.S., G1 and MyTouch, how did HTC and sold T-Mobile. Sprint also announced it will offer Android phone on October 11. Internationally Android-powered devices have been launched in 21 countries with 32 carriers in 11 languages.

Lack of Android devices could prevent some developers from wasting money and effort to develop applications for Android Market.

Google confirmed that the Android Market has more than 9500 applications - some of which are free and some of them are paid. Here are just a part of the number of applications available in Apple App Store. Nevertheless, Android users are very active, Google said. Users have downloaded an average of 40 applications on their devices, and four out of five users download at least one application a week.

Now, when manufacturers finally, hire new devices Google Android, there could be much larger audience of developers to achieve. Motorola, is expected to announce two new phones Android on Thursday. And the Chinese manufacturer Huawei has announced the prepayment Android Phone for Europe. Other manufacturers such as Samsung and Sony Ericsson, are also expected to launch new Android phones this year.

The big question for the developers to go forward is whether all these new Android devices will work with applications in the Android Market.

“There will be not just one screen size or resolution. CPU utilization can be different,” said Bardin. “It’s all the different devices from different manufacturers. And now we do not know what will happen. We do not know the changes that each manufacturer makes to the OS.

The only thing that can make the phenomenal success of Android if Google can crack the mobile advertising market with its application store. In June, Google has launched a beta version of AdSense for mobile applications, which allows developers to profit from the display of text and image ads in their iPhone and Android applications.

“If consumers do not have to pay for applications, because they are subsidized by advertising,” Bardin continued. “And if the developers can make money through advertising, is home to launch Android for sure.”

Blame’s iPhone 3G network woes on you and me

Many applications means large amounts of data.

(Credit: Matt Hickey)
There was a lot of talk lately from AT & T customers - especially iPhone users - fed up with the quality of service they receive from AT & T. These include dropped calls, shoddy coverage and slow data rates. People are upset that they have a fancy device, which loses much of its usefulness, when the network drops out. I can feel their pain.

Moreover, I saw myself this effect over the weekend. Penny Arcade Expo (PAX), one of the largest conventions in the world game, was held in Seattle, where I live. Thous. nerdiest of nerds of the world were here, and, as expected, many people use IPHONES, that is, many people use 3G AT & T’s service.

PAX, which opened Friday, also had a wonderful guide to the Convention expojunkie.com viewers made specifically for the iPhone. It features maps, programs and other background information to quickly make PAX best experience. A side effect was thousands of visitors, using the 3G coverage in Seattle at the same time - in addition to thousands of local residents, who are already using it. Service slowed to crawl.

On Saturday, backup services up to speed for most of Seattle. AT & T, may have hit the switch and turned on more towers. This team, which controls the areas with major events and network settings, when one causes problems. Whatever the company did it fixed.

Blessings and curses
But the question is: what can we expect from AT & T, which Apple sells millions of units of a revolutionary product that relies on its network, and then provides millions of applications that put enormous pressure on the same network? Do we really expect, AT & T, to be able to handle such a large amount of data?

Easy answer: “Yes. We pay for the services we want to work properly.” Which, of course, an excellent response. IPhone users pay more for their data than other customers AT & T Smartphone (we leave our regular customers from telephone discussions, even those who use the data for simplicity).

But iPhone users can also use much more data on the device than other users, even those in the same network. One technology analyst, Chetan Sharma, reckons that while the typical wireless subscriber consumes 120MB per month, iPhone owners typically use four times. It is 480 MB, or almost half gigabytes.

So let’s assume that the data at face value, and then consider that AT & T has 11.8 million users of smartphones and more than 9 million users of iPhone. Thus, there is almost as iPhone users as standard users of smartphones, but each of them uses four times more data than users of smartphones.

Of course, there are other smart phones there. And most of them downloadable third-party applications. And many of them are data-intensive. But here’s the thing about the iPhone users: They actually use their applications. Smartphones have been around for quite some time, but actually iPhone users to stream video, browse the web frequently and receive direction. It could be argued that nobody has ever done so much with a device like the iPhone users. And this is a blessing and a curse.

Simply put, because of iPhone users, AT & T just much more demand for data than its competitors. AT & T currently has a great potential, and that’s why IPHONES work at all. If not for the rapid deployment of updates - it has spent billions over the past two years to try to cope with 350-percent increase in traffic - a million IPHONES from AT & T will simply not work at all.

The problem as I see it is not AT & T, which apparently works just as fast as it can. I blame directly on the users themselves iPhone. And I am one of them.

no other network could keep pace with the demand that we iPhone users are asked to better than what AT & T does now.

From the frying pan …
You can find many entries on forums, where people are shouting: “Forget AT & T, I’m going to Verizon!” or something equally angry. But they do not get big picture: switch you will lose your beloved iPhone, but you will also be on the network, which, if it gets immediately rumored iPhone may eventually having the same problems AT & T is now, perhaps even more worse.

Think about it: if the other networks are much better service-wise, but AT & T has a large amount of data, why is there a problem? This iPhone.

One unanswered question is: Apple I consulted with AT & T on bandwidth considerations before starting the App Store, which is undoubtedly responsible for many of these AT & T in alliance?

If yes, then yes, AT & T must increase its network to compensate, which he does. Any communication network can be overloaded. Sometimes I wish my boot loading will be quicker, but when my neighbors also loading, it affects me. But I do not blame Comcast.

If, however, Apple did not consult with AT & T to launch App Store, it’s hard to blame AT & T not being able to cope with the massive amount of unexpected information. And it is definitely not true.

Another option, and one that connects these two responses, and the one I think most likely that she might as AT & T and Apple had underestimated the amount of data intensive applications that will be provided in such a short time.

Indeed, most in the industry were surprised by the success of App Store, which is about a year delivered more than 1.5 million applications for the iPhone and IPod Touch users. If Apple and AT & T had expected such a reaction, it would be reasonable to be angry at AT & T for not able to keep pace with demand. But if not, then, again, it is the users themselves, who are bogging down their own networks.

Imagine, AT & T’s 3G for All-you-can-eat buffet. Say this buffet has 110 customers a day. Now imagine a normal person will make three trips to the buffet, and then come to users of iPhone. There are 90 of them - in addition to the 110 clients already served - and they make the equivalent of 12 flights a day in the canteen. Each. This is because they are data gluttons. Suddenly, not enough food to go, because gluttons (again, I’m one too) eat more than anyone expected. Will this wine in the restaurant, it was because of the ribs, as well as Prime mashed potatoes?

AT & T: We worked round the clock
I do not think so. Especially when you consider that iPhone users sticking around from day to day. AT & T representative Seth bloom, “the company Blogger guy,” says the buffet orders over prime rib and mashed potatoes - the amount of $ 17 billion to $ 18 billion this year.

He also said, AT & T expects that the throughput of 3G networks will meet the growing demands of consumers to the data in the near future. “Crews are working around the clock to carry out more than 1,900 new cell towers nationwide and the doubling of its fiber backbone to address increasing volumes of client:” He told me instant messages.

This line of thinking will not quiet the critics, of course, easy and quick to scold your carriers cell in the Internet. This is simply an insult to me, too (I’m sure I get my share Slam on this post), and I do not want to calm the people down. I do not think that anything can.

If AT & T expect this amount of demand? Perhaps. But it’s iPhone users themselves, which cause the problems they are experiencing. In the near future the situation will be rectified, according to Bloom, and jumping ship is not going to help your situation any.

Gameloft hearts App Store

Well, it turns out, not everyone hates Apple’s App Store. Gameloft, publisher of the ubiquitous mobile games around the world, like the iPhone and IPod Touch quite a bit. In a recent press release, Gameloft announced that to date they have sold more than 6 million games on App Store, making it the largest his platform.

“Our main focus is digitally distributed games,” said Sanette Chao, Director of Public Relations Gameloft. “Apple is our main customer and the IPhone OS our number one platform. I think that already speaks volumes of the importance of iPhone games for our overall strategy.”

Among the concerns about the restrictive handling of Apple’s App Store Certificates and Squeeze, which other publishers might be feeling in the landscape of ever-decreasing prices the game, the report may come as a breath of fresh air. Indeed, with the consumer point of view, very little wrong with the App Store - if you just do not want to do things that Apple is not willing to provide. In the games department, in particular, $ 10 can buy you more than it can be almost any device in a gaming console history. And developers like Rockstar are now getting into the game with the Apple App Store coming port Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, is clearly something in the current economic model from Apple is attractive even for big guys.

That “something” can be seen as a huge built-in audience. With more than 40 million worldwide owners of iPhone / IPod Touch platform, customer base is huge. Enter the name of the $ 5 could lead to greater profits than $ 20 DS games, for example, which may have limited distribution and availability. Gameloft has 35 games in the App Store at the moment, and although his current best-selling game are the UN, GTA-clone, Gangstar, and rival Madden NFL 2010, he also enjoyed success with asphalt and Evergreen Real Soccer, said Chao. This is the advantage of any online store has more than the physical media - the infinite shelf space and a chance for a long tail.

According to Gameloft, the formula for success lies in listening to feedback from users, the creation of affordable books, and the creation of mass appeal, intuitive game. “Our strategy from the outset was twofold. Firstly, we supply aggressive line-up of high quality games and then we adapt in real time on consumer needs,” said CEO Michel Guillemot Tuesday in declaring Gameloft’S.

Market App Store has recently been estimated at $ 2.5 billion per year, compared with $ 60 million on the market Android App. It is no surprise that Rockstar would get in this activity. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the Nintendo DS sold 680,000 copies worldwide, and at $ 35 retail, which is 23,8 million dollars. Assuming $ 10 retail price on Itunes, Chinatown Wars will sell 2.38 million copies of the same productivity Nintendo DS - a large number, but an achievable view of the large global database and adult audiences skewing the iPhone and IPod Touch.

While many things can be Askew from App Store, it’s good remember that very much still going very well for him.

Or is it still true mainly for games?

Apple claims Vonage Mobile VoIP App

Vonage announced Tuesday that its mobile Voice over Internet Protocol App was approved for use on Apple iPhone and IPod Touch.

Internet phone provider announced the launch of the beta test app, and that general availability will be announced later.

Last week, Apple confirmed that the request for Vonage App approval was delayed by technical issues with Vonage software. Apple representative told CNET News then, that Apple is working with developers to resolve this issue, but no more detailed information on the nature of this issue.

This delay came to light on the heels of federal regulators at the opening of the probe solution from Apple, to keep the application from Google Voice App Store. AT & T - iPhone from Apple partner - has denied playing a role in this decision.

Google Voice, which lets users receive calls on one telephone number in several places and make cheap international calls, it was considered unsuitable for inclusion of the App Store in July, after he was released for BlackBerry smartphones, and Android.

Apple, however, said application Google Voice never actually been rejected.
