Skype is thriving in a tough economy
Scott Durchslag, company Chief Operating Officer, told reporters during a press conference here at the Consumer Electronics Show, that Skype actually seeing a surge of new users, as people look for ways to reduce their telephone bills.
“We see that the consumer is taking steps to accelerate Skype, because people believe that they can get value and quality without the huge trade Off”, he said. “And we see a completely new business opportunities in the market because the company that I would never have thought would be a target for Skype are actively coming to us and asked a solution.”
Skype, owned by eBay, offers downloadable software that allows people to make free calls to other Skype users and low-cost calls to mobile phones and regular phones. The service also offers free video chat. The company has at present, it has more than 370 million registered users. This addendum was about 30 million subscribers quarter Durchslag said. These users make many phone calls. Today, about 8 percent of the world’s voice minutes, based on the Skype call, “he said.
All told, Durchslag said Skype has grown by about 50 per cent over the previous year in almost every metric minutes to new subscribers for income. He also said that the company was just its seventh straight quarter of profitability.
All this comes at a time when other technology companies hunkering down for a long, dark recession. Meanwhile, Skype is seeking to expand its services and solutions to new markets. In particular, the company is considering the development of special services for the business market, offering more video, as well as expand its presence on mobile phones.
In this framework, the company announced that an expanded version of the software Skype 4.0, which significantly improves the quality of audio and video, is finally out of the beta version in February. He also announced it will offer its Skype software for mobile devices at the pre-Google Android phones, along with about 100 Java-enabled phones, including those sold in the U.S.
Unfortunately, Skype is still not available for Apple in the iPhone, but said Durchslag iPhone version will be available in the App Store,-something. But exactly when is still in the air.
“We must ensure that quality is the use and works very well, before we can announce a program on any device,” he said in an interview after the press conference. “But we have something for the iPhone, as soon as it’s great.”
