In 1997, the mobile phone could make two kinds of sounds. It could “ring”-our anachronistic word for the electronic trills phones, which produce in response to an incoming call or it could play a melody line, like “Für Elise.” If you’ve never heard a cell phone signal from Beethoven without the harmony, you understand that this was not so much of such a choice. Around this time, Nokia, the Finnish mobile phone company introduced “smart” Messaging “, a protocol that allows people to send text messages to each other on their phones, and Vesa-Matti Paananen, a Finnish programmer, realized that it would work equally well for transmission of bits of song. Paananen developed software called harmonium, which enabled people to program their mobile phones to musically complex sequences-melodies with rudimentary harmonic and rhythmic accompaniment, they could forward to friends using smart messaging.

This fee can be considerable: record labels get twenty-five per cent each master tone sales (though they should pass along some of that artist and publisher). “It’s unbelievable mess,” Les Watkins, vice-president of Music Reports, Inc music licensing and accounting firms, he said. “Many of these companies were aggregator very early players, essentially beholden to the major record labels and music publishers to get the rights they needed.
