Cox readies wireless network
Cox is becoming closer to add wireless to the bundle.
Cox had been dreaming of wireless for a long time. He participated in a joint venture with Comcast, Time Warner, and other cable companies, to create a new wireless company. The plan is to use the Sprint Nextel network for the provision of services. But less than three years, the company argued for the marketing and technical issues, and they dissolved the joint venture.
Now Coke is to build a wireless network on its own, using nearly $ 550 million range it had bought in the Federal Communications Commission’s advanced wireless services and 700 MHz wireless auctions.
In the executive Cox, who spoke with the Journal said the company plans to tie its wireless service with existing TV and broadband services. And the company hopes to get more of their customers hooked on mobile TV. He is also considering opening the shop of mobile applications, like the one that Apple offers for the iPhone.
Cox does not just offer a mobile phone. In addition, the company wants to offer its customers broadband wireless data services to 3G when on the go. Cox, the third-largest cable operator in the United States, provides services to approximately 6.2 million residential and commercial customers, but it only offers the service mainly in South and South-West. The company said it will use roaming deals to ensure a national wireless coverage for its customers.
The company has not yet discussed the prices of their services, and even talked about the revenue targets. But one thing is clear, it is likely to be a hard market for Cox cracks. With more than 84 percent of Americans who already subscribe to a mobile phone service, Cox probably will have to compete on prices to customers to switch to its service. The company will also have to focus on getting cool new phones offer their subscribers too. All of this will be easy to market, which has at least four national wireless carriers and many smaller regional players.
And no mistake about it, building a wireless network is not cheap. Even though Cox has already paid money for the spectrum, an analyst at Jeffries and co told the magazine that the company will invest at least $ 300 million before it can break even on the enterprise.
