Stephenson’s talk is just beginning, and I will update this post soon.
Update 8:30 AM PDT: Stevenson spoke about the energy in the fourth-generation networks, which are on a limited basis next year, but not extensively until 2012. Stevenson said that the company should do something to increase the speed of the so-called LTE networks profit.
“Between now and then a long time,” he said. AT & T announced on Wednesday that it will upgrade its current network faster version, which is about twice the theoretical speed of the connection to the network. (However, only new phones designed for use in the new version will get the speed increase.)
“We will go ahead and deploy some fairly aggressive wireless broadband,” said Stevenson.
Update 8:45 AM PDT: Responding to a question about the economy, Stephenson said he has the influence of AT & T, in particular, he wired business. Stevenson said people tend to decline in home phone lines are often cut down on cell phone or TV service.
“Wireless is a priority in this business,” he said, noting that he has encouraged his company offers a mobile version for any service can.
On the domestic front, the company knows that you need to raise the prices at which it can deliver video at home. “There will be more and more demands for bandwidth,” he said.
Stephenson said, AT & T is testing “pair bonding” technique, which should be at speeds of 40 to 50 megabits per second range. Mossberg pressed on him as possible.
“I think I can call you this year,” said Stevenson.
Update 8:50 AM PDT: Mossberg Stephenson pressed whether mobile phone bills could go up or down over time.
“It probably depends on who you are,” he said, adding that wireless costs actually variable in spite of the fact that most people pay a fee for the data. Now, he said, the margins on the iPhone service and wireless services in general are good. At the same time, he noted that each bit of data that passes over the network in terms of cost, that variable pricing could be an option down the road.
“The market will dictate that more than anything,” he said.
Update 9:05 AM PDT: visitors asked about the decision not to allow Slingbox ‘iPhone player for the use of 3G. Stevenson said that in the reality of open networks makes live streaming video problematic.
“You start congesting the network and voice quality is reduced, he said.
