India postpones auction of 3G spectrum

IDG News Service - India postponed until January 30, 2009 auction of 3G spectrum to give potential bidders more time to study the tender documents and the rules of the auction, the government agency said Tuesday.

Potential bidders requested an extension of the originally scheduled date of January 16, according to India’s Ministry of Communications. The final date for applications to bid at the auction was extended until January 15, from the previous 5 January, he said.

The auction of spectrum for broadband wireless is scheduled to take place two days after the completion of the auction 3G spectrum. The auction for 3G spectrum is likely to be hotly contested by both Indian and foreign companies.

India mobile market booming, adding more than 10 million new users per month, despite the fact that the global economic slowdown affects the demand in the country for other goods and services, including computers.

“The mobile phone is now seen as a necessity,” said Kapil Dev Singh, country manager at research firm IDC India.

The victory of 3G licenses will allow bidders to get 2G spectrum to offer services, the Government indicated. While 3G, is not expected to be immediately earnings spider, 2G services market is already open existing players, said the analyst.

China approves production of 3G mobile phone licenses - Cabinet - update

BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - China State Council or cabinet, said he approved the issue of third-generation mobile phone licenses.

The Cabinet said in a statement on the Government website that 3G licenses will be issued for networks using domestically developed TD-SCDMA standard, as well as internationally used WCDMA and CDMA2000.

BuzzIt said that the long-awaited decision was taken after a regular cabinet meeting chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao. The move reflects the fact that the nation’s largest telecommunications firms, which are largely completed the restructuring of its programs, according to the statement.

The statement said that China will continue to support the development and application of its own TD-SCDMA standard.

“The issuance of licenses for 3G has played an important role in stimulating domestic demand and promote the competitive structure of the telecommunications sector,” said Cabinet.

China announced in July that 3G licenses will be issued after a six-month restructuring of the telecommunications sector relating to the merger China Mobile (NYSE: CHL - news - people), with smaller telecom player China Tietong communication and CDMA mobile network assets of China UNICOM (NYSE: CHU - news - people) of China Telecom.

As a result, China Mobile, China UNICOM and China Telecom have been reorganized into full service group with fixed and wireless operations.

Kyocera Wireless and MTS Allstream team up to offer a new cellular phone and wireless data options for customers Manitoba
